A Swell Day

Dear Friends,

I was draggin’ my wagon after last week’s hip surgery, but I think I may have turned the corner this morning.

I’ve already. . .

Cleaned my eyeglasses.

Color-code highlighted my appointment calendar.

Soaked my feet in Epsom salts.

Swatted four houseflies from my recliner.

Took my blood pressure three times.

Cleaned and oiled the foam pads of my crutches.

Clipped coupons from the grocery store flier. You wouldn’t believe the prices they’re offering on Ensure and Metamucil! (I wonder if they deliver…)

As if those savings weren’t enough to put a spring in my step (or, um, shuffle), Rose dropped off the latest issue of Birds and Blooms. I’m learning all sorts of things about the secret lives of owls, like the calculated method by which they select prey, swoop in silently, and engage strong talons to suffocate the prey before moving in with their flesh-mutilating hooked beaks.

On my next walk in the woods (Blanche says I’ve got to believe I will walk again!), I plan to keep an eye out for a wet, hairy mass along the path — it just might be the regurgitated bony, furry remains of a Great Horned’s midnight snack!

Nature is so therapeutic.

Well, as you can see, this day is already terrific — and it’s just about to get better.

My ma, Sophia, is bringing me to the assisted living center so I can bathe in a handicap accessible shower. I don’t even have to scream for help when I get Suave in my eyes – I can just pull the red string on the wall!

While I’m at the center, I must remember to ask Edna if I can borrow her book of 1,000 Cat Crosswords. It will be the perfect way to pass time this evening while sucking on the throat lozenges Stanley promised after work. I’ve had such a tickle in my throat ever since the breathing tube was torn from my trachea as I lie awake, yet paralyzed, on the operating table.

Well, gotta go – there’s Ma pulling in the driveway, and if I had to guess from glistening dome of plastic wrap on the front seat of her car, she brought Jello!

Hope your day is as swell as mine,

❤ Dorothy

    1. I keep telling my family I need a bucket around my neck so I can move things from one area of the house to the other. The backpack works for most things, but I haven’t figured out how to balance a cup of coffee on my head and crutch my way through the baby gate and down the step to my favorite glider. If I master this, I’ll be sure to upload video! 🙂 Thanks for saying hi, Eric! Hope the fall weather is fine over in Canada.
